Part 1 - Munich Remembered: 48 Years On
[Ìüíï åããåãñáììÝíïé ÷ñÞóôåò ìðïñïýí íá äïõí ôá links. ]On a day when all United fans pause for reflection, ManUtd.com pays tribute to the men who lost their lives through the words of those who knew them best.
Here in Part One, read tributes to Roger Byrne, Geoff Bent, Eddie Colman, David Pegg and Mark Jones.
In [Ìüíï åããåãñáììÝíïé ÷ñÞóôåò ìðïñïýí íá äïõí ôá links. ], read tributes to Duncan Edwards, Tommy Taylor, Liam 'Billy' Whelan, Walter Crickmer, Tom Curry, Bert Whalley.
Roger Byrne
Full-back Aged 28. 277 appearances, 19 goals, 33 England caps
Sir Matt Busby: “An aristocratic footballer, majestic in his movement. Roger was so fast, one of the fastest full-backs of all time – but at the same time he controlled his movement beautifully, like Nureyev.”
Harry Gregg: “Roger Byrne was one of the biggest men I ever met as a captain and a person. He was a wonderful captain with the moral fibre to fight the club’s battle with the players and the players’ battle with the club. He was very much a man.”
Frank Taylor, journalist: “Byrne was a superb gamesman who, although he was never a great tackler and his heading ability was scarcely past amateur stage, made himself into an international footballer of the highest repute by concentrated effort, careful and constant application.”
Bill Foulkes: “Matt wanted a strong character to be his skipper, a man who commanded respect from his colleagues, kept himself in tip-top shape and who understood the game thoroughly. Clearly he found him in Roger Byrne. But for the accident, I am sure he would have emerged as the ideal long-term replacement for Billy Wright
as captain of his country.”
Albert Scanlon: “I had always been a little afraid of our previous captain, Johnny Carey, and I never spoke to him unless he spoke to me. It was quite different with dear old Roger. We always felt Roger understood us as well as he understood football. One of the things I think is wrong with football today is that there doesn’t seem to be discipline and respect commanded by men like Roger.”
Geoff Bent
Full-back Aged 25, 12 appearances
Jimmy Murphy: “Geoff Bent was a loyal player for Manchester United. When Geoff matured and reached his twenties there were many clubs after him but he stayed loyal. He could look after himself and was a great tackler. He knew how to use the ball as well. Roger Byrne was a consistent player and very brave, that was the reason Geoff got so few games, but he was good enough to hold a regular place in any team.”
Bill Foulkes: “Had he lived, it is difficult to believe that such a classy performer would have remained in the shadows indefinitely.”
Eddie Colman
Half-back Aged 21, 107 appearances, 2 goals
Sir Matt Busby: “The little stylist with the wonderful shake of the hips and great control of the ball. Eddie was a beautiful player to watch, a contrast to Duncan Edwards but they complemented each other.”
Wilf McGuinness: “Eddie Colman was a great mate of mine and he was a chirpy lad who was also a terrific player. He pushed the ball – never kicked it – and he jinked past players… he was known for his swivel hips.”
David Pegg
Forward Aged 22, 148 appearances, 28 goals, 1 England cap
Bill Foulkes: “David was always a player with a delicate touch. To me he almost seemed to tip-toe down the wing. He was not a big scorer himself but he could see the openings. I remember beating Anderlecht, the Belgian team, 10-0 in the European Cup and all the lads trying to give David a goal – but without success. He was a nice lad.”
Sir Matt Busby: “David Pegg was a great asset then and would always have been a great asset to any team because he was a natural, left-flank player. David was very, very clever. He was our best left-winger by a mile.”
Albert Scanlon: “David Pegg was the complete left-winger, a brilliant ball player.”
Mark Jones
Half-back Aged 24, 120 Appearances, 1 goal
Wilf McGuinness: “Mark Jones was something of a father figure – he smoked a pipe – and was always on hand to make sure none of the younger players overdid it when we were out.”
Bill Foulkes: “Yorkshireman Mark was a really lovely fellow, but my word he was a tough nut, and nobody took any liberties with him on or off the field.”
Sir Matt Busby: “A big commanding player. A strong type of centre-half, dominating in the air.”

Duncan Edwards
Half-back Aged 21, 175 appearances, 21 goals, 18 England caps, 5 England goals
Sir Matt Busby: “He is the greatest player of his age I have ever seen. Yet though he has soared up among the stars, his feet are still on the ground.”
Jimmy Murphy: “When I used to hear Muhammad Ali proclaim to the world that he was the greatest, I used to smile. You see, the greatest of them all was an English footballer named Duncan Edwards.”
Wilf McGuinness: “He could play as an attacker, creator or defender and be the best player on the pitch. Once he was playing for the English League XI against the Scottish League: 2-0 down, Duncan was moved from wing-half to centre-forward. He scored a hat-trick to win the game.”
Sir Bobby Charlton: “The best player I’ve ever seen, the best footballer I’ve ever played for, the only player who ever made me feel inferior.”
Bill Foulkes: “He had everything. He was powerful, technically gifted as good as anyone. He was a freak to be honest, mature beyond his years. He was one of the boys but also a gentleman, the model professional.”
Tommy Taylor
Forward Aged 26, 189 appearances, 128 goals, 19 England caps, 16 England goals
Bill Foulkes: “Tommy Taylor as a player was quite different, big and strong. I rate him as one of the all-time, best centre-forwards in the game, and he had yet to realise all his potential. He was a typically bluff Yorkshireman in many ways, often acting the clown, and a great team man.”
Jimmy Murphy: “Tommy was an artistic centre-forward who thrived on hard work. Once he moved to Old Trafford he blossomed. He was the perfect example of a footballer reaching the top because, despite all the problems and difficulties, he remained cool, never rushed and appreciated the help of his colleagues.”
Walter Winterbottom, England manager: “We had the players and the team spirit to win the World Cup in Sweden in 1958. We lost three key players in Roger Byrne, Duncan Edwards and Tommy Taylor in the Munich air disaster; and no international team can lose players of that calibre.”
Liam ‘Billy’ Whelan
Forward Aged 22, 96 appearances, 52 goals, 4 Republic of Ireland caps
Albert Scanlon: “Billy was a magician with a ball at his feet. I really don’t think he knew how good he was and how much better he could have become. A world-class forward. There is no doubt about that. His vision and passing was sheer class.”
Sir Bobby Charlton: “Liam was a great player, a dedicated professional with a tremendous amount of skill.”
Bill Foulkes: “Billy could look slow on the pitch, moving with an awkward, ungainly gait, but he had stamina in abundance and I would guarantee that if the players went for a mile run, he would be the first back every time. What made him special, though, was his mastery over the ball, which was quite phenomenal.”
Walter Crickmer, Club Secretary
Tom Curry, Trainer
Bert Whalley, Coach
Bill Foulkes: "Walter Crickmer always reminded me of a little dynamo, nothing was too much trouble, while Tom Curry, the trainer, remains for me the father figure he was to all the lads. He treated us all like boys, and such was his character with a comic sense of humour, that we all looked up to him like a father. Bert Whalley seemed to spend his whole life with the young players and he was certainly a tremendous help to me when I was a part-timer.
"Bert used to write to me every week and the letter would arrive like clockwork on a Friday. In it would be a detailed report on how he thought I had played the week before and then a description of the team we would be playing the following day with details about the man I would be marking. I was almost an outsider at the club in those days but Bert bridged the gap and kept me in touch so that I felt a part of the club."
